Y&R Opinion: Storylines Start Exciting, Yet Always Fall Flat

Ashley laughs and Tucker frowns as they talk with Jack and Diane.

Recent Y&R episodes have seen a decline in ratings, which may indicate issues with current storylines. I’ve got some thoughts on this.

Nate walks into Victoria's office.
CBS

The business storylines have been all-encompassing, pushing many interpersonal dramas aside, barring the Adam/Sally/Nick triangle.

Sure, the writers try to mix in a little bit of romance or drama, but it quickly peters out when someone decides that they’d better take over someone else’s business! Back to the old tried and true… But it seems more tired than true lately.

Rushed or Forgotten Storylines

A lot of the storylines seem rushed, or they climax too soon and then are left to flounder or are just forgotten altogether.

Chance and Summer talk.
CBS

Summer and Chance seemed to have something, but… Where are they? Is anything happening there? Who knows!

Nick and Sharon are talking a lot. It’s mostly about business, and I don’t see any romantic chemistry there anymore. Been there, done that. Maybe they’ll get back together because it’s an old and comfortable routine, but it doesn’t make me want to root for them.

Mamie’s return

Mamie hugs Nate.
CBS

Mamie’s back, and they tried so hard to make her seem sinister. We had to sit and listen to Devon and Lily talk for hours about how her motives didn’t add up without actually coming to any conclusion.

She is working with Tucker to eliminate Jill and bring her family back together. She’s Nate, Devon, and Lily’s great-aunt. What triggered her to think about them after spending twenty years away from Genoa City? I doubt we’ll ever know.

Ashley returned and told Mamie that Tucker frightened her, which was enough for Mamie to question her partnership with Tucker. We’ll see how that plays out. How was Tucker supposed to get rid of Jill, anyhow?

CBS

Sally’s Holding Pattern

So many are tired of Sally or angry with her, feeling that she is stringing Nick and Adam along. As annoying as it was to see her in a tug-of-war, I felt for her when Nick broke it off.

Sally hugs Nick.
CBS

I’m grateful Nick finally bit the bullet and dumped her, but it doesn’t make me happy seeing how sad they both were, but Sally bounced back pretty quickly.

Nick knew Sally was in love with Adam when they met, and Sally did too. Nick could have been proactive and cut his losses then, but he ignored the massive red flags – like many of us do occasionally – and went full-in with the best intentions.

This storyline needs to resolve itself… And quickly. It’s been dragging on for around a year and a half. It’s enough already; everyone’s tired of it!

Sally throws her head back in frustration.
CBS

Who’s the Worst Friend?

Sally’s one “friend,” Chloe, who has no idea how to be a friend, consistently gives her biased advice based on how much she hates Adam.

Chloe talks with Sally.
CBS

If I were Sally’s friend, I’d be concerned for her health, mental and otherwise, especially since she revealed she has feelings for both men. I’d suggest she take some time off, maybe a few days or weeks, and take some time to breathe. She could work on her new business and consider what she wants in life.

Chloe should suggest Sally not choose any man right now and look out for number one because she seems so confused. The worst thing she did was to have sex with Adam again. Adam did it because he wanted her back, and Nick dumped her. We know Sally didn’t do it because she wants Adam back; she still doesn’t know what she wants!

I no longer care who she chooses. Just choose one man and stick to it so we can all move on with our lives, Sally!

Victoria’s demotion – Why?

Victoria being demoted from being CEO of Newman for years was a massive blow, especially for someone whose life revolves around her career. Love her or loathe her; she’s a complex character, and we’re told that she did well at the job.

Why would Victor mess with his own company and family just to prove that one of his kids wants to backstab him?

Victoria Newman talks to her father.
CBS

At least Victoria’s not back in the mailroom like Adam almost is, having to kowtow to Nate when he’s a Harvard grad. Why these people don’t just go to other companies is beyond me.

Toying with the children Victor claims to love is what a narcissist does. This is not entertaining to anyone. Nikki should be standing up to him instead of whining and making suggestions. These are her children, and she’s coming off as a patsy.

This isn’t the type of so-called drama that anybody wants.

Victoria talks to her father.
CBS

Concurrent repeating storylines

Adam was working at Newman, but he got let go. Now, he’s back, working his way up, looking for respect and to get his job back.

Kyle was working at Jabot, but he got let go. Now, he wants to come back to the family business. He wants respect and to get his job back. Sound familiar?

Kyle smirks at Adam.
CBS

Nate was at Chancellor-Winters. He screwed around and left the company. Now Mamie is trying to get him back at Chancellor-Winters. She wants him to earn his respect and get his job back.

Hasn’t anyone realized that these are all basically the same story?

Who should have the co-CEO position at Jabot? Whoever can do the job best! If someone’s doing well at their job, you don’t just replace them! Same with Newman Enterprises… Victoria should have her job back.

Victoria and Nate.
CBS

The Bugged Bonsai

On paper, the “Bugged Bonsai” storyline was good, but some things don’t translate to screen correctly, and I feel this is one of those times.

There was no drama. Tucker sent a bonsai tree to Jack and Diane as a so-called peace offering, and yet none of them checked it out. Every single person who saw the tree should have been immediately suspicious that it had a listening device hidden, yet… Nobody did a damn thing about it.

The bonsai tree.
CBS

Phyllis was the missing link, letting Jack know that Tucker had bought a listening device. They could have used that information and fed Tucker misinformation, but even though they talked about it, they didn’t. Jack just gave Tucker back his bonsai, and the incident was forgotten.

They could have done so much more with this. Billy and Jack could have fought over the bonsai, and it could have been dropped, with the bug being found in the shattered remains.

People complain that storylines take too long to work themselves out, but the writers are forgetting that storylines don’t always have to be on fast-forward. Save some of the good stuff!

Jack uses his phone's flashlight to look at the bonsai.
CBS

Mariah, Tessa, and Aria

Aria finally gets her hearing aids, and the needless worry that Tessa and Mariah had over should finally be over. But then what?

Tessa and Mariah need a good story. The baby storyline was okay for about one episode, and then it was just wash, rinse, repeat.

Mariah grins broadly as she holds Aria.
CBS

Claire Grace – Another Ashland?

Claire was introduced as though we were all interviewing her for a job. It was boring and long-winded—more sitting and talking.

Claire and Nikki.
CBS

Nikki took Claire as her plus one to Jack and Diane’s wedding, and nobody batted an eye. If a stranger was brought into my home without my consent, you better believe I’d have something to say.

Later, Claire showed us that she adores Nikki and Victoria. Maybe she’s faking it, and she’s obsessed with them… Who prints out those articles anyhow? Can’t she bookmark them and check them out online?

Who is Claire Grace, and what’s her deal? Is this another story that falls flat? I hope she’s something special… Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Claire Grace.

  1. It was about time Victoria was demoted, all she did was have sex with Nate. Can’t wait til Nate gets his, he’s such a narcissist like Kyle. So sick of them both and the relationship with Audra is so old and boring.

    1. The story line are very weak. I am kind of tired of the same storylines about business. What about the days of old when there were more cat fights. Or someone stalking someone. Is there is no rivary anymore. Everyone’s become so much friendlier. Boring. Let’s get back to the old days of the young and restless.

      1. I agree things are dragging out on some situation and you blink on others and it’s over. Maybe some new writers would make a big difference.

  2. I agree with Terri, everything she says about Victoria is so true. Every time she gets with a man she immediately wants him to work at Newmans, and doesn’t hesitate to promote him into top positions. She demoted her own brother for Nate. Everyone keep pointing the finger at Adam as the backstabber, but I think this time it is Victoria, she is the one to watch. As for the love triangle with Sally and the brothers Nick and Adam, Nick knew Sally was in love with Adam, but he went behind his brother, so if his feelings get hurt oh well. These guys keep going behind each other when it comes to women. Why do they have to do this over and over again, this is really old. Please put more women in the story lines. Enough already.

    1. Whatever happened to Victoria breaking the photo of her and Victor? Why do we have Summer after her step moms boyfriend? Yuck! She already slept w Billy on a bet. Yuck times 2. Nick should be furious about that. And he’s really over the top about Adam and Sally when he’s the one that should’ve stepped back from the start. Devon was and is the BIGGEST Hypocrite!!! Please knock him off his high horse.

      1. Do the writers really think we want to see reruns every day? Quit playing so many flashbacks! I like Sally and Adam together. Get her pregnant again. Chance and Sharon are weird. Supergirl and Chance are better suited. Can Phyliss just go away? So tired of her. I fast forward all her scenes. There are many great charactors that need deeper storylines. Writers do your job.

  3. Sally needs a new love interest and dump those two. Also the male side needs a little new DNA in the gene pool. I wouldn’t put up with any if them for a minute. Why are your women always so weak. Can’t we have one successful young woman who doesn’t owe her success to a male? I vote Sally. Also the corporate presentations and corporate speak are crap. Basically everyone’s presentation consists of “I’m doing something great”. I like the actors and the idea of corporate drama. You just need writers the know corporate culture and strong women.

  4. Genoa City gives out Corporate positions like Halloween candy. They shuffle homes like a deck of cards. The “solo” writer needs help from humans, other than “bots”; their needle is stuck. So much shape shifting that the actors must be dizzy. Make it make sense.Paul moves to Portugal when his daughter goes to Genoa City? Children that are fought over just disappear. Christian, the Twins,et al. Look for Conner & Johnny to come back all grown to fight over Lucy.Sigh.

  5. I think once and for all let Adam change and be a good person and be with Sally. Kyle is being a spoiled brat and he needs to be knocked down once and for all. I have not liked Victoria for a whole now, she needs to be put in her place once and for all. I hate the pettiness of Nicki and her children against Adam. They never lay off him and blaming him for everything. He did not live the privaliged life they have for years. Please give Nick someone he can be with and be happy, not someone Adam has been with and let him become an ally to Adam.

  6. I am 82 years old and have watched this soap for 50 years and I would be so upset 😭 but maybe it is time for Y&R to bite the dust.

  7. Adam has pulled Nick from a fire. Adam has given his kidney to Nicks daughter. And…Adam gave HIS son, Christian to Nick to raise after the death of Sage. The Newmans need to start giving Adam SOME RESPECT instead of treating him like dirt!

  8. I don’t like how the siblings are so mean towards Adam. Then add Nicki with her really ugly attitude towards Adam. I’d move so far from them and never let them anywhere near him again. They all have problems that need to be addressed, look at their own issues and leave Adam alone.

  9. This whole show is getting boring. Don’t think Christine should even be on it anymore. Just because she’s family.
Pay the proper actors and get rid of her she has no business making what she does. Minor player and a winer to boot.

    1. I think the writers should go back to the drawing board. If we need more action not these boring story lines.

  10. Long gone are the days where you would run home from school to watch the soap opera. I used to love Y&R. There is no excitement any more. Nick should start to be evil. Sally and cloe need to go. They have the most boring story lines. So tired of Jack and Billy. They need more characters like Phyllis. Business, business. Do they not have any doctors, lawyers etc. he’ll the whole city only has one cop. No firemen. No teachers. Oh please get Bette storylines going

  11. Agree with everyone on Adam! Bugs, you hit the nail on the head. What does Adam need to do to get respect? Nikki was a stripper. How dare her think that she is without fault. Victoria is spoiled and I am getting so sick of the bouncing back and forth with all of these companies.

  12. I’m so done with the Nikki, Nick and Victoria attitude towards Adam,,, their self righteous attitudes are so terrible that who wants to watch one person get bashed so bad for so long and like these 3 are so perfect,, shouldn’t they be held accountable? No wonder ratings are down as there are no finished stories plus not one happy one, it’s let’s see who we can destroy today, it’s all old news and disgusting to say the least.

  13. Head shaking sad story lines especially the Sharon and Chance hooking up. Chance and Summer make a much better couple, with potential for a great love story. Nick and Sharon should be together as the next generation Victor and Nikki forever couple.
Alana needs to more screen time with a great story. A Devon, Abbey, Alana triangle. The worst story was the two baby daddy to Dom with surrogate mommy only to have it implode to nothing good.
Perhaps Kyle and Alana, if anyone can slap the entitlement out of him it would be her. Daniel and Lily – NOT!!

  14. Bring a new family in. Bring Nikki’s sister back and have her fall for Jack. What happened to Olivia? Bring Ray Rosales sister back for Kyle.

  15. I’m tired of all the story lines. Nick/Adam/Sally is so old. Victor feigning dementia is insulting. Cricket walking around like her dog died is getting old. And all the new memory bubbles are really tiring. They take up 10 minutes of every show.
